The Importance of Architectural Design
Why architectural design matters: how aesthetics, ergonomic and technical functionality, sustainability and comfort shape the spaces we use every day.
When the spaces, buildings, objects and even the plants and trees along the roads we encounter in daily life are designed according to certain rules or ideas such as function and beauty, we call this architectural design. Architects as well as people from other professions can take part in the architectural design process. If we consider the importance of architectural design and architectural design in general, it covers a wide range, from designing a building project or furniture to arranging the plants and trees on sidewalks. Architectural design helps organize the spaces where we live our lives and make them functional. Using the most practical and attractive designs, it expands your comfort zone. Sometimes this means our own home or office; at other times it means the roads and sidewalks we walk on.
The Importance of Architectural Design and the Design Process
Covering a wide spectrum, architectural design is in practice more subjective than the descriptions above suggest. The importance of architectural design becomes clear only once a design process is carried out and the result is built. Being suitably useful and working as intended is called functionality. In this respect, architectural designs give us the opportunity to examine them from two different angles. The two key aspects of architectural design are:
- Ergonomic functionality
- Operational functionality
Since a design serves a purpose, what we need to be careful about is what we expect from it. If expectations and wishes are taken into account at the first stage of design, the results will be more lasting and satisfying.
Architectural design is the discipline that covers creating, planning and designing physical spaces such as living spaces, buildings and public areas. The importance of architectural design includes the following:
- Aesthetic values: Architectural design is an artistic process that adds aesthetic value to the exterior and interior of a building. Its aim is to create spaces that make people feel good.
- Functionality: Architectural design is also used to improve a building’s functionality. During the design process, users’ needs and requirements are considered, and the layout, lighting and other elements of the spaces are defined accordingly.
- Sustainability: Architectural design also contributes to the sustainability of buildings. Designers help plan buildings so that energy savings and the use of natural resources are optimized.
- Human health and comfort: Architectural design is also very important for human health and comfort. Designers help plan spaces by considering factors such as acoustics, thermal comfort and daylight.
- Creativity: Architectural design is a process that supports creativity and innovation. Designers try to create innovative, original designs by pushing beyond existing norms and limitations.
For these reasons, architectural design has a major impact on people’s quality of life, and designing buildings to be functional, attractive and sustainable is very important.
Technical Functionality and the Importance of Architectural Design
How a building performs in use is the most important element of technical functionality. The key point to emphasize about technical functionality and the importance of architectural design is that the defined criteria and elements actually work. At the same time, functional, purpose-built spaces should be created for users. The goal is not only designs that look good, but spaces that are easier to use because function has been built into them. Technical functionality is considered an important element of architectural design. The success of an architectural design is measured by how well the building suits its purpose, how usable it is and how well it functions. Technical functionality involves designing all of a building’s features and functions correctly.
Architectural design is the process of organizing, shaping, making functional and aesthetically enriching both the interior and exterior spaces of buildings. This process optimizes a building’s functionality and usability while also keeping architectural aesthetics in mind.
Technical functionality covers a building’s construction, structural design, ventilation, heating, lighting and other engineering features. For an architectural design to succeed, all of these features must be designed and executed correctly. In addition, to meet users’ needs and expectations, the layout of spaces must be suitable in terms of usability, accessibility, safety and health.
Architectural designs that apply technical functionality correctly make people’s lives easier and provide comfortable living spaces. Moreover, aesthetically rich architectural designs combined with the right technical features and functionality make buildings more appealing and have a positive effect on their surroundings.
