Countertop

A countertop, or worktop, is the surface that sits on the base cabinets and takes the daily work. In a kitchen it is where food is chopped and dough is rolled, and where the sink and hob are set in; in a bathroom, the vanity top does the same job on a smaller scale. It is one of the most used and most visible parts of any kitchen.

Countertop materials

  • Laminate: affordable with plenty of colors, but its edges are sensitive to water and heat.
  • Quartz composite: non-porous, stain-resistant and easy to care for, which makes it a popular choice.
  • Granite and marble: the look of natural stone; marble can be etched by acidic food and needs more care.
  • Solid surface (acrylic): can be made with an integrated sink and invisible joints, and scratches can be sanded out.
  • Porcelain slab and solid wood: the first handles heat very well; the second looks warm but needs regular upkeep.

Design points

Height, depth and thickness are set according to the user and the cabinet system. Sink and hob cut-outs, joints, sealing along the wall, and the splashback all need to be considered together. For stone and composite tops, the final template is usually taken on site once the cabinets are installed.

In a render, the countertop is often a focal point. When the vein direction, surface gloss and edge profile are right, the kitchen looks far more convincing. To plan the whole kitchen in 3D, see 3D kitchen drawing.
