The hayat is a covered gallery in the traditional Turkish house that runs along the front of the rooms, facing a courtyard or garden and open on one side. The rooms are entered from it, and the stair usually arrives on it. Timber posts and balustrades define the outer edge, while the roof or the eaves of the floor above shelter it from sun and rain. It is often described as the earliest and most open form of the outer sofa.

The hayat in the Turkish house

The hayat is a space shaped directly by climate and daily life. In mild and warm regions, sitting, working, eating and even sleeping happened here for much of the year. Raised sitting platforms, called köşk or seki, may occur at its ends or in the middle. Over time many houses had the open side of the hayat glazed in, turning it into an enclosed sofa, so the same building can carry traces of both open and closed phases. The hayat creates a gentle transition between courtyard and room and opens household life to the outdoors.

The hayat in survey and restoration

A survey records post spacing, balustrade details, floor finish and eaves construction in detail. Later glazing and partitions are dated using nail marks on the posts, layers of paint and old photographs. Whether a restitution proposal shows the hayat open or enclosed depends on which phase of the building is chosen, and that choice should be justified. Exposed timber takes the weather directly, so post bases, balustrades and floor edges are the points most prone to rot; repair renews them piece by piece in the same species.
