The Importance of Landscape Architecture
Why landscape architecture matters, from aesthetics and sustainability to public health, and how a landscape design project is managed from brief to upkeep.
Often described as a profession of the future, landscape architecture is a field that is still not well understood. The word “landscape” (paysage in French, the origin of the Turkish term) refers to scenery. Because the name itself is not fully understood, the profession is often misunderstood too. Making living spaces beautiful gives landscape design great value, and design in these spaces is where the importance of landscape architecture becomes clear. In general terms, a landscape is the scenery the eye can see. Landscape architecture is not limited to garden and park design; it covers everything in that view, from gazebos and planting design to lighting elements on waste bins, and it extends to large-scale urban park planning and design. The main reason it is confused with other professions is that it spans such a broad area. Alongside plant knowledge, landscape architecture requires expertise in soil, climate, construction and materials.
Landscape architecture is a discipline concerned with the design, planning and management of open spaces. It is applied in the planning and design of urban, rural and industrial areas, parks, gardens, garden designs, recreation areas, roads, beaches and other outdoor spaces.
The importance of landscape architecture can be summarized as follows:
- Aesthetic value: By combining natural and built elements, landscape architecture creates attractive, eye-catching open spaces.
- Environmentally friendly: Landscape architecture protects natural landscape features and supports a more sustainable use of the environment. It also encourages eco-friendly practices such as increasing vegetation cover and preserving natural habitats.
- Human health and well-being: Landscape architecture encourages people to enjoy outdoor spaces and matters for their health and well-being. More green space and the use of natural landscape elements can also lower stress levels and improve overall health and happiness.
- Functional and usable: Landscape architecture makes open spaces functional and practical. For example, designing a park or garden around how it will actually be used lets people use it comfortably.
- Economic value: Landscape architecture plays an important role in the regeneration and development of urban areas. Landscape architecture projects can raise the economic value of an area and boost its tourism potential.
Design and the Importance of Landscape Architecture
Spread across a wide field, this profession works hand in hand with urban and regional planning, architecture, various engineering disciplines and geography. There are many frequently asked questions about the importance of landscape architecture and its place in the industry. In recent years, as people consume resources carelessly, non-renewable energy sources decline and trees are cut down to make way for buildings, the importance of landscape architecture has become impossible to overlook. With population growth, preventing new construction is simply not possible. However, this discipline makes it possible to offset the harm that buildings cause. Greening existing buildings has become very common recently. In this sense, we can say that landscape architects do far more than plant parks and gardens.
The Importance of Landscape Architecture and Project Management
Although landscape architecture is sometimes seen as a luxury today, it is a practical profession: it designs the spaces we need for our future and aims for more livable places that are both functional and beautiful. Alongside hardscape design, planting design considers in advance the height and spread of the plants in a project and whether the soil in each planting area suits them. Landscape architecture is used in many areas, including the design, planning and management of open spaces, parks, gardens, campuses, golf courses, industrial sites, city planning and even natural areas. It matters because it makes natural and built environments more functional, attractive and sustainable, improving people’s quality of life and happiness.
The landscape architecture process includes identifying the client’s wishes and needs, developing the design concept, detailed design, implementation, and the maintenance and management of the finished design. This process requires sound planning and management for the design to succeed.
Landscape architecture does more than improve the look and function of a site: it also protects natural resources, helps expand green space, supports water conservation and management, contributes to ecosystem protection and reduces natural disaster risks.
In short, landscape architecture is a discipline focused on improving the environments people live in and protecting natural resources. Project management is critical to sound planning and successful design, and when managed well, landscape architecture can raise quality of life and protect natural environments.
